Are you talking about the file list in the File Dialog ? In the past, I have seen crashes caused by the KDE file dialog preview, which tries to play audio / video files in the side panel. Can you try removing the "Aside Preview" side bar to see if it solves the crash ?

I'm not sure what the "Aside Preview" side bar is, but I have removed all screens except for "project tree". When I hit the "add clip" icon and move the mouse over an .mp3 file (on the desktop) Kdenlive shuts down...the whole program disappears instantly.

when I use "add clip" from the top bar menu and move the mouse over an mp3 (or wav) file in my "music" folder, Kdenlive freezes and then crashes.

As JB I can't reproduce your issue. And just like him I understand from your description that the bug is appearing in the KDE Open File dialog when you move over the mp3 file, just when it would want to display the small player to quickly know what the file contents.
This can be disabled from the settings icon (top right) > Show Aside Preview.
And you can also test if the dialog crash occurs in another KDE multimedia application, for example Dragon Player.

and as a workaround you can try to drag-drop the mp3 from file manager onto kdenlive's project manager

Any news?
Do you have multimedia PPA enabled, except maybe the one for Kdenlive?
Sometimes the ffmpeg/libav versions mixs lead to crashy behavior with previews etc.
Please give feedback (after a while I will consider it is an installation issue).
